    1. HmmmThis was certainly an interesting read for me! I read this novella over a period of two days--there were parts of the book I really loved and other parts that left me scratching my head a bit. Overall though, I enjoyed my reading experience and I would happily recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an "edgy" or "realistic" gay romance. The prose is richly vivid and descriptive and the two main characters are fully fleshed out. What I liked most? The authors' unflinching choice to p [...]

    2. It’s rare that a SMP book fails to deliver for me but sadly I struggled with this one. It’s only a novella but I kept wishing it’d end sooner so I’d be done. It’s not a bad concept but the execution leaves something to be desired. The story attempts to add complexity and depth in numerous ways but I’m not convinced any of them actually worked. Instead of a story about long time friendship turning into true love, this reads more like an examination of cultural and societal issues. The [...]

    3. Nick, an American of Jewish/Mexican ancestry, and Angelo, a Cuban American, had been friends since they were kids, living in Chicago. Angelo was always there until one day in college Nick was swept off his feet by Barret, a rich (White?) politician and moved to DC. Barret abused Nick all the time, but Nick stayed for 2 years--believing that nobody would believe his story since Barret was a very powerful man (who always concerned about re-election). One day, Nick felt enough was enough. So he wen [...]

    4. This story surprised me because, well, I was expecting to have to suffer more for these boys to be together. Nick and Angelo grew up together, both gays and misfits, and everyone was expecting for them to get together; and instead Nick ran away with the first guy showing a real interest in him, leaving Angelo, big bro, the one who, maybe, was only waiting for Nick to be old enough. Both Nick and Angelo are from eclectic families, not bad, but maybe not steady and safe like a sheltering environmen [...]

    5. Reviewed for Confessions from RomaholicsReview at Confessions from RomaholicsThis is a review from an ARC that was provided by Storm Moon Press! Two friends torn apart by life’s circumstances are given another chance, this time with love surrounding them. Their biggest challenge: they have to overcome their own fears and demons in order to grow together and find that little perfect nitch of happiness.Nick and Angelo, best friends, have formed a special bond of brotherhood, having stuck close al [...]

    6. 3.75Angelo gets a phone call from the best friend he lost 2 years previous, all in the name of Love. Him and Nick go way back, they were each other rock during the tough times and laughed together during the good; they were brothers. Now the sudden call Angelo gets to come pick Nick up at a Greyhound station, Angelo knows something is wrong. It's confirmed when he sees Nick for the first time after so long, he's not the same vibrant man that left him 2 years ago. There's only one explanation for [...]

    7. I always love a story that has characters who knew each other previously and then get back together to find that they want and need each other. Nick and Angelo settle into their relationship by mid book, and I enjoyed seeing them in their lives for the rest. I found the book to be well-written with great character development, and I was quite satisfied by both the arc of the story and the arc of the relationship.

    8. Angelo and Nick are best friends. They’re both gay, but they’re not together. Then Nick meets Barrett, a suave rich kid who sweeps Nick off his feet, and off they go to the sunset. Angelo is left behind. Years later Nick finds his way back to Angelo, having been physically and emotionally abused all this time. Barrett has become a political figure of authority, and Nick is on the run. Then suddenly, after all these years, Nick makes a move on Angelo, and they succumb to their desires for eac [...]

    9. Author's Note: If you like friends-to-lovers scenarios, hurt/comfort handled respectfully but not traumatically, multi-ethnic characters that don't fit neatly in boxes, and slice-of-life tales written with love, humor, and wit -- you'll probably enjoy After the First Taste of Love. If you prefer heavy plotting, tied-with-a-bow endings, and romance novel tropes (overwhelmed lovers, passion over warmth) -- you probably won't. Equally important, this is book 1 of a trilogy.Book 2 (After the Familia [...]

    10. It's rare that I read contemporary fiction but I did enjoy this novella. Nick and Angelo were friends but Nick falls for rich kid, Barrett and goes off with him. A few years later, Nick is back in Angelo's life after being abused mentally and physically by Barrett who is now a political rising star. I found their multiculturalism interesting as well as Nick's struggles to overcome his abuse. There is some violence, not unexpected from Barrett, but it is muted. (though I do share so reservations [...]

    11. This book had a promising premise but fizzled out. While I enjoyed the portrayal of Nick's abuse, the hook up happened early so no UST and after it happens the rest is rather dull. Others have explained the problems much better than I can.
