    1. Kate Johnson has been in hiding, living quietly in the country with elderly and blind “Smokey Joe” Bernard (as sort of a caretaker for him) for the past six months after being on the run for the past two years. Kate was once an investigative reporter and she is the only survivor of the Broadcaster Butcher (who brutally stabbed her twenty-four times and left her to die in her home.) The Broadcaster Butcher has been targeting/murdering female news broadcasters. Agent Hayden Reed (who is part o [...]

    2. A true suspenseful novel, that will keep you guessing who the serial killer really is, all through the book. I kept thinking I had figured out who the killer was but then a twist would happen and I would have to go back to trying to discover who the killer was and why was he after female broadcast journalists. There was plenty of suspense, mystery, and danger. This could have become a gruesome book but most of the murders being committed were done off screen and talked about after the fact. The [...]

    3. Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest reviewIf you like your romantic suspense books with a heavy focus on the whodunnit plot and a slow-burn romance between an FBI Agent and a headstrong former-journalist who survived an attempt to kill her by a serial killer, then this is the book for you!Hayden/Kate is perfection and I fell in love with all the secondary characters too . Smokey Joe, Hatch, Mae .Personally, this was one of the best romantic suspense books that I've read in a [...]

    4. I've killed no one. I've ordered no one to be killed. These children who come to you with their knives, they're your children. I didn't teach them, you did.– Charles MansonMeet No Sympathy. He’s cold, blunt, uncaring, unfeeling. You aren’t going to like him. A man without a conscience, he appears to be totally emotionless. He’s the person for whom most of our explicit swear words were coined - Ruth MinshullIn The Silence of the Lambs, Thomas Harris describes it concisely. He lives down i [...]

    5. My search for another Laura Griffin-style author continues There was nothing wrong per se with this, it's just that the mystery was kind of ridiculous (lots of red herrings, but ultimately the resolution was effectively random and revealed in an info-dump) and the characters' chemistry was rather uninteresting. It was nicely-paced and didn't lag, but the writing felt repetitive at times (lots of characters repeating the same phrasing over and over again). I wish the world was built a bit more as [...]

    6. Good mystery, plenty of suspense, but the cock-blocking got a bit ridiculous after while. Final rating and (maybe) review to follow.

    7. Get out your notebooks, your pencils and your magnifying glass, we are out to solve the case of the Broadcast Butcher! Beautiful broadcasters are being butchered and mutilated, the case has never been solved and the only victim to survive has gone into hiding. Bring in an elite group of FBI agents known as The Apostles, who work outside of the box to catch their prey and the chase is on. the Broken by Shelley Coriell is a romantic mystery/thriller that threatens to give its reader whiplash with [...]

    8. ***This mini-review has also been posted on The Social PotatoActual Rating 3.5The Broken was a thoroughly entertaining read to say the least, and I probably would have rated it higher had the actual revelation behind the mystery not been a complete buzzkill.Aside from the revelation, another issue I had was the multiple POVs, but in the end I got used to them since the two main characters did remain in the spotlight.I think one of my favorite things about this book were the secondary characters. [...]

    9. 4.5 Stars for SHEER Twists and turns! WOW, this book had me guessing at every single turn. I seriously would think I had the killer pinned down and then WHAM! another twist or turn would come at you. I LOVED HAYDEN REED, watching Kate break down his walls and how the author described little changes that you could see that were throwing him off, for example- Mr. suit and tie misplaced his suit coat, etc. Just the small things that should you that even the most hard core investigators could break/ [...]

    10. Shelley CoriellThe BrokenThis was my first romantic suspense that I have ever read, and I have to say I have come to appreciate this genre. I knew what was going on and I was sitting on the edge of my seat as I turned the pages! Definitely a must read from start to finish. But to consider what Kate Johnson had to undergo in this mind gripping suspense with being stabbed several times from a familiar source yet still finding time to fit in a love interestWell, it is simply romantic! Not to mentio [...]

    11. Not really my cup of tea. I found the plot too complicated and unbelievable. The villain's motivation was really odd and there was just too much going on. Romance was okay but too rushed for me and I'd have liked more of it. I think it skews too much suspense for my taste and the suspense is pretty grisly and OTT IMO.

    12. DNF. Plot seemed good and so did the characters. My problem with it was the writing. I was trying so hard to be absorbed the story but something was missing. One minute I was picturing the characters in place only to find out the writer moved them somewhere else. Just seemed like the details I need to really visualize what was happening was missing.

    13. So, it’s been a while since I’ve read a good crime thriller. This had all the things that I think make one great. The plot was full of things to keep you guessing. It wasn’t predictable and the characters were well-developed. Plus, there’s a good romance built in, which makes almost any story better if you ask me.The story revolves around Kate. I admired her strength through all she had endured. I really appreciated that she wasn’t another weak personality. I also enjoyed her friend Sm [...]

    14. a small group of FBI specialists known for working outside the box and, according to some, outside the law. Some media pundit nicknamed them the ApostlesThe Broken is the first book in author Shelley Coriell’s new series, The Apostles, and is a stand-alone novel. The Broken was a wonderfully written romantic suspense/thriller story told from several points of view, including the two main characters and the villain. Kate, formerly known as Katrina, is a woman on the run. After almost losing her [...]

    15. It's been a long time since I've read an Adult Romance/Mystery. I've been constantly reading YA for the last few years. It definitely was refreshing to take a step away from the teen angst scene and get into a book with real heart wrenching story. Now this isn't my first Shelley Coriell book, I read her YA contemporary novel Goodbye Rebel Blue back in January. So I knew going into The Broken that I was going to love her writing stlye. The Broken was a great book from beginning to end. Be forewarn [...]

    16. I receive this book from NetGalley to give an honest review. The story started off awesome, and strong and kept up with it the whole way. There is murder, suspense, romance but nothing too sappy. My favorite character was Smokey he was just one of those old men that you could grow to love! He was just witty, full of life, laughter and love and so willing to take care of Kate even though he needed to be looked after. And she kept pushing him away for good reason as we find out later on. Now Kate [...]

    17. Kate Johnson is in hiding.Three years ago, her brother tried to kill her, and tried again after she left the hospital. Kate Johnson is a new name. She's gone from broadcast journalist to home health aide and online jewelry maker. For the last several months, she's been working for old soldier Smokey Joe, who is happy to run her online business in exchange for having someone who is patient and competent with his PTSD, and who doesn't think he's helpless because he's blind. But the idyll is coming [...]

    18. A very sharp edged and interesting thriller, "The Broken", by Shelley Coriell was a fast paced quick read. Featuring FBI Special Agent Hayden Reed and the "Apostles". Although don't ask me who the "Apostles" actually were. (?) That went clean over my head. Agent Reed must team up with a former victim of the "Broadcast Butcher" to track down a sadistic killer. Katy Johnson somehow had managed to avoid being killed by the Butcher. She was badly wounded and scared by the event 6 years previously. N [...]

    19. I read this, the first book, after the second book cuz reading a series out of order is how I roll. I LOVED the second book, The Buried. This one I didn't love but did enjoy it. Coriell writes flawed, fascinating, compelling characters and spins entrancing stories. The mystery, and all of the people involved, unfold slowly, reeling us in. Occasionally I got frustrated with how slowly Coriell doled out info but it did work. Then events sped up and it looked as if the mystery had been solved about [...]

    20. I was drawn into this book immediately and found myself unwilling to put it down. This story was so engrossing with its blend of mystery, suspense and romance. Kate is a survivor of a brutal serial killer and has been running and hiding from him since her ordeal. Agent Hayden Reed is a special agent who is intent on stopping the Broadcast Butcher and knows Kate is the key to stopping the murders. This story was so well written and entertaining as who found yourself trying to solve the mystery as [...]

    21. This debut romantic suspense had it all. Right from the start you’re absorbed into the story and the characters. Not only were the main characters interesting but the secondary characters were as well along with some of the quirks the author gave them. The back story of both main characters was as riveting as their current day story. Their pasts should have broken them but instead made them two very tough individuals who really had no clue that they were missing something in their lives until [...]

    22. The Broken (The Apostles) by Shelley Coriell is heavy on the suspense and light on the romance. This is just great because the suspense is close-your-eyes-scary at times so it dominates this story. This book is solidly written with a smooth strong pace with very likable good guys and very atrociously bad ones. Very truthful, this is a compelling read that I wanted to read in the light of day instead of at night before going to sleep. The Broadcast Butcher is the kind of villain that gives one ni [...]

    23. Ms. Coriell has a new fan! I came across her Apostles series by chance and I'm so happy I did. I just finished this book after reading it in one sitting. The writing is fantastic, the suspense kept my heart rate up and I shed a few tears. I loved how the story and the relationship between Kate and Hayden progressed. It was a slow burn and believable. You felt the attraction but also could see they didn't want to act on their feelings. The story focused more on the crimes than the romance and for [...]

    24. I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.I love reading suspense and this one delivered in spades. Ms. Coriell introduces us to flawed characters who see surviviors in themselves as well as others. Lots of plot development, character development and who done it action until the very last page.If you like suspense with a touch of romance, I would recommend this book.

    25. For those fans of Karen Rose, Sandra Brown, and Karen Robards here is a new author for you. I read this as an ARC--and you'll likely have to wait until 2014--but this book is worth it!Just when you think that you've read all the "romantic suspense" you can stand you should pick up The Broken. It will remind you why you like the genre. Ms. Coriell keeps you guessing until a few pages from the end. One scene made me jump in my train seat when I realized what was going to happen. I recommend this b [...]

    26. The suspense part of this romantic suspense was pretty good with lots of complex fast paced action but the romance was kind of weak. I liked the hero and heroine but their relationship with each other wasn't very realistic. Trying to catch serial killer, agent Hayden searches for Kate the woman in hiding who survived killers attack.
